Cauche le mentionne dès 1640 sous la graphie « Aze-minthe », Flacourt aussi ; le Muséum conserve encore un échantillon récolté par ce collecteur en 1648). On désigne ainsi suivant les régions : Diospyros hazomainty H.Perrier, Diospyros calophylla Hiern Diospyros gracilipes Hiern et Diospyros toxicaria Hiern, Maba buxifolia (Rottb.) Pers. et Maba magnifolia H.Perrier. [Betsimisaraka] Diospyros haplostylis Boivin ex Hiern., Diospyros microrhombus Hiern et Tetraclis clusiifolia Hiern. [Tankarana] Tetraclis ebenifera H.Perrier. Toutes ces espèces appartiennent à la famille des Ebenaceae et fournissent des ébènes de très belle qualité. Il est à peu près certain que d'autres espèces ont existé dans le passé mais ont complètement disparu sous l'effet de l'exploitation abusive.
